Tripleshot Youth Team fielded its largest U17 team to date and brought home four Canadian Records, 11 National Championships, medals of every colour and personal bests from the 2017 Canadian U19 Track Cycling Championships held March 30 – April 2 at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre in Milton, Ontario.
Riley Pickrell claimed four Canadian records (7 gold, 1 silver) dominating the U17 races and setting Canadian Records in three individual races (Individual Pursuit, 500m Time Trial and 200m Sprint) and the Team Sprint with Teams of BC teammates from Vancouver.
Sarah Van Dam won nine medals (4 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze). Two of the medals were in team events – silver in the Team Sprint with Casey Garrison and gold in the Team Pursuit with Garrison, Megan Barnes and Jessica Maitland.
For Pickrell and Van Dam, it was the third time they have raced at Junior Nationals; for Garrison, Barnes, Maitland and Aedan Crocker it was their first time racing at Canada’s newest indoor cycling facility in Milton. Following months of training with coaches Kurt Innes and Lister Farrar, their Tripleshot teammates here in Victoria and other BC riders at monthly training camps in Burnaby, this event culminated with numerous personal bests and many top-10 placings among the best youth riders in Canada.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the way our Tripleshot riders performed in Milton“, said Kurt Innes, coach of the Tripleshot Performance Program and head Coach of the FastTrack program which starts at the Westshore Velodrome on April 10. “It was an amazing week of racing at the 2017 U19 nationals for our Victoria based program current, and alumni athletes. As a coach, it is always so very rewarding to help young riders achieve their goals. In Milton, every rider raced to new personal best performances, so I couldn’t be more happy”. Innes added, “ I hope these performances from our athletes in Milton will inspire other youth athletes to take up track cycling here in Victoria.”
“Not only did these six riders race smart and fast, but they should also be recognized for their team camaraderie and their respect for their competitors and the volunteers at the event,” said Lister Farrar, Head Coach of the Tripleshot Youth program. “I am incredibly proud of this group of young men and women that worked together to help their teammates achieve their goals.”
Tripleshot youth team alumni Erin and Adam Attwell raced in the U19 category. Erin won five medals (2 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze) and raced to a qualifying spot for this summer’s 2017 World Junior Track Cycling Championships in Shenyang, China. Adam added two silver and six top-10 performances. Tripleshot youth team alumni Jay Lamoreaux was also in Milton, preparing for the 2017 World Elite Track Championships. 2017 marks the 1st year that Jay will compete for team Canada at the elite track worlds in the men’s team pursuit, and individual pursuit events. Farrar emphasized “Jay is a great role model for our Tripleshot youth athletes to look up to and we want to wish Jay and his Canadian team-mates all the best as they compete against the world in Hong Kong, April 12-16”.
