All Ages & Abilities Cycling Network

As part of the City of Victoria's Active Transportation Advisory Committee, I've just become aware of a few things coming up that might be of interest to cycling commuters. This is news to me as much as it is to you, (and please don't blame me if you think these plans are really stoopid!) but there are three projects planned:

- Harbour Road: Two-way protected bike lane on the east side of the road, connecting the Galloping Goose Trail and the Johnson Street Bridge

- Vancouver Street: A shared road AAA route between Bay Street and Balmoral Road, protected bike lanes in the downtown core, and a shared road AAA route between Meares Street and Park Boulevard. This project will also connect to the Dallas Road off-street AAA infrastructure via connections through Beacon Hill Park.

- Hillside / Quadra route: Shared road AAA route with preferred alignment on Graham Street and 5th Street, extending to the Saanich border at Tolmie Ave.

The City is kicking off engagement efforts with the public this weekend and there are a number of open houses, design workshops and pop-up activities taking place over the next month. The City has an on-line survey collecting digital feedback for the next four weeks and design charrettes with agency partners and stakeholders are being planned. In particular, the route on Hillside Quadra requires a creative design solution adjacent to the school and we are working closely with the school community (parents, teachers, administration, and students) to explore design options that can meet multiple objectives.

You can visit www.victoria.ca/cycling to learn more. The city produced a short video to share the stories about how the downtown infrastructure is making a difference and to encourage more people to get involved in the network design as we move into neighbourhoods.
